With his cruel honesty and justified cynicism, it's noteworthy that David Zax (a.k.a E.F.E.) is incredibly modest. In his cover letter, he says "it might sound trite, but it's the only result I get." His vocal style has earned him comparisons to Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits, and his drum machine/crusty guitar/bass/keyboard one-man show will please the ears of anyone who's heard and enjoyed Someone Else's Problem.
This is a 'best of' collection with songs from his previous 3 cassettes, but not having heard the original 3, I find a uniforimty in the songs selected.
The Fuds is Zax's live band, but on this tape it's Zax still manning the eletronics, vocals and bass, with Andrew Marychurch on lead guitar, and the 2 sharing rhythm. Sean Davidson plays slide guitar for 2 tracks and bass for one of them. This tape is more punkish/bluesy, and is probably the one I enjoyed most out of the 3.
This one is under the name David Zax, but has even more "other-people" input than "The Fuds". Playing the majority of the music is Jason Leppo, and "Arsekiss Town", the grittiest track on all of these tapes, features Frank Scott and "Pauline Who Won't Let Me Use Her Last Name Because She's Afraid Her Dad Will Find Out She's In A Rock Band".
Those who don't like abrassive language should avoid Zax's music, but it is never inappropriate, overdone or gratuitous. And in the immortal words of Sigue Sigue Sputnik "P.S. A sense of humour is always essential"
